Summer Break Project

I got together with Edwin,a good friend from school to start a personal project to showcase our illustration skills. He is a very talented and is supposed to be graduating at the same time as me. I see it as a great opportunity to collaborate with some one from school, something that i have never done, and wish i had. I think that it is a great way to push yourself to do better work, specially when it is with some one that is very talented.
The project is a mini zine where we are going to have a combination of illustrations and layout and to create maybe a couple of portfolio pieces. We want to be very illustration heavy but we want to show at the same time that we are able to understand layout and design in general.
Right now we are trying to come up with a name for the MiniZine and start to get things going from there. It is going to be a little like push pin almanac, started by some of my favorite Illustrators, Milton Glasser and Seymore Chwast.
Our first theme is going to be something very open, Art. we are going to write about our views and opinions on the subject and create illustrations based on this. we are each going to write one article which will be a spread, and then we'll get together to discuss the theme and create a feature which should be 2 spreads.
It should be a very fun project and i hope that we can create something that is interesting.

Break Begins

I just finished my quarter at school. I have a 4 week break (1 extra week than normal) and i really want to start getting organized and start working on my portfolio as much as I can. I need to start to think about how is it that i want to brand myself and what is it that I would enjoy doing after graduating.
I think when presenting your portfolio it should have the things that you enjoy working on. You need to sell the services that you enjoy doing, this is exactly why you got into a creative career, because you want to enjoy your job.
I need to do some research and try to see how can i sell my self.

New Blog Born

The birth of another blog.
I created this blog to track my process to my graduation as a graphic designer. It has dawned upon me that my life as a college student is about to finish and i need to start getting my stuff together and having a blog will motivate me to create a better portfolio.
There are a lot of really good designers/students graduating the same quarter that I am graduating which should be an interesting experience. This has both positive and negative aspects. The negative is that there will be a lot of competition and it will be very hard to stand out as the best which I would like to be. But at the same time this competition will make me try harder than everyone else and make me have stronger pieces.
I feel that there is a lot of pressure to have a very strong portfolio. I have not cared about grades through out my college experience because the way i see it, your grades don't reflect your skills as a good designer. Your Portfolio does. So in every class i feel that the most important thing is to have strong portfolio pieces.
The portfolio presentation is around 6 months away and i feel that now it is the time to start getting ready for it.
